About Girls Friendly Society
For almost 150 years, Girls Friendly Society has been working to create a world where all girls and young women can thrive, are free to be themselves and are proud of who they are. Unlike many organisations, they aim to achieve this through early intervention, working with girls to prevent the degradation in confidence and self-esteem that comes with around age 11, rather than reversing it during the teenage years. They primarily work with girls in the most deprived areas of England and Wales, where they know girls’ futures are disproportionately disadvantaged.
Girls Friendly Society support them through services that provide a non-competitive environment that values every girl individually and allows them to build and consolidate the foundations that will prepare them for life’s challenges.
Girls Friendly Society's Challenges
Girls Friendly Society's Achievements / Goals
Girls Friendly Society launched seven new groups in the last academic year, and they have plans for more next year! Many of these groups are running a waiting list, leading us to open cluster groups to meet the need. Their most recent survey showed how quickly attending Girls Friendly Society can start to make a difference – within the first six months high girls report improvements in trying new things (81%), making friends (75%), believing they can achieve (73%) and feeling proud of who they are (66%).
They’ve also launched a fee waiver, allowing them to reach the families who need them the most – almost 50% of girls in our newest groups are accessing the fee waiver, ensuring that all girls can attend, no matter their circumstances.
