About Burma Campaign UK

Burma Campaign UK is part of a global movement working for human rights, democracy and development in Burma. They play a crucial role in coordinating the international campaign for human rights in Burma. They work closely with Burma’s amazing grassroots activists and democracy campaigners to persuade governments to take the action they are calling for.

  • They work with activists and organisations across Burma to make sure their voices and demands for international action are heard.
  • They mobilise international action to cut money and arms going to the military.
  • They expose human rights abuses that the military tries to keep secret.
  • They generate worldwide media coverage, ensuring the world does not forget about Burma.
  • They have helped secure sanctions on military companies.
  • They have forced many companies to stop doing business with the military.
  • They have ensured life-saving aid has reached villagers forced to flee attacks by the Burmese Army.

Burma Campaign UK's Challenges

Following a military coup in February 2021, the Burmese the military have been waging a brutal war against the people, killing thousands, bombing homes schools and hospitals, and forcing over 3 million people to flee their homes. 20,000 political prisoners are in jail.

Thanks to the resistance of the people of Burma, using a combination of armed struggle, strikes, peaceful protest, and economic boycotts, the military are in a fight for their survival, losing control of more territory every day.

The scale of the crisis in Burma is enormous. However, the British government’s response is far too limited and far too slow. People in Burma are doing everything they can to oppose the military and they are working hard to support them and to get more effective international action, but it is frustratingly slow.

Burma Campaign UK rely on public support for their funding, they do not get any government grants, and funding is always a struggle.

Burma Campaign UK's Achievements

Since the military coup, they have led the campaign in the UK for action to cut off the supply of weapons, equipment and funding to the military, through targeted sanctions. The British government has enacted 19 rounds of sanctions since the military coup.

They are leading the global campaign for sanctions on aviation fuel to Burma, a key request from people in the country living with the daily threat of airstrikes by the Burmese military, who are indiscriminatory targeting civilians, schools and hospitals.

They work closely with sympathetic MPs and Peers in Parliament to increase the pressure on the British government. Through this work we have convinced the British government to support a referral of Burma to the International Criminal Court, and to intervene in a legal case at the International Court of Justice on the Rohingya genocide.
